Customer rating is 4 of 5  Leapfrog Scribble and Write   2010-07-22

My grandchildren, both pre school, love the Scribble and Write. After a period of time using the product they are quickly learning the difference between upper and lower case letters and are attempting to write letters independently. Good to take on journeys to keep them amused. Light and easy to carry around.

I got this for my stepson shortly after he had a surgery which required him to stay laying down most of the day (at 4 years old - ha!). He absolutely loved it. Initially, he played with it all the time - he loved drawing on the screen. However, the four different settings aren't something he can keep focused on - he usually changes it quite often until the game allows him to do something he wants. I'd recommend getting this with an etch-a-sketch or similar toy as well, as your child may want to draw things that the game doesn't allow. However, it's the ONLY effective tool I've ever found to help him learn (he stays at home). He's writing now more than workbooks and activity books have been able to get him to do. Combine this with the Leap Frog DVD's and a LeapFrog reader, and you'll hit a home run in getting your child to learn letters almost effortlessly.

My son received this as a gift when he was about 2.5 and it was a bit advanced for him at the time, but it has definitely helped him form letters since he has been playing with it (he turns 3 this month). He knows how to turn it on, put it to the setting he wants (settings are shapes, numbers, lowercase letters, uppercase letters), and selects the letter he wants to draw. The instructions for writing the character or shape are very easy to follow and he is gradually getting better at starting the stylus at the right spot and following the line. After he's made the letter, he can turn off the lighting behind it so he can see only his writing. Then he swipes the button at the bottom to clear the screen and starts over again. As another user pointed out, it does not sense your writing at all as far as being able to tell you whether you've formed it right, but would you really want it to? Now, when I ask him to draw certain letters he seems to favor on paper (ie without the guide of the toy), he can do it. I definitely attribute this growing skill partly to this toy. It is not too loud, musical, or repetitive, and is quite compact, making it a perfect toy for the car.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Not as high tech as it looks, but amazing how quickly kids learn with it!   2010-06-18

First off, the downside to this: The screen is nothing more than something I had as a kid that can be bought at the dollar store. It displays writing or shapes with pressure, not anything high tech like other Leap products. Not that it's a bad thing! Just sometimes hard to maintain complex drawings, like a smiley face. Also, the "eraser" is really flimsy. I cringe every time my son rips it across the screen. The pen is attached with a very short cord. I cut it loose after my son's frustration started to make the toy less fun. The pen is chunky so there's not really a chance of losing it.

Now the positives! My son was going to be in the hospital for a few days so I wanted something he could use while stationary. Of course they bandaged up his writing arm, but that's besides the point! He's 3 and a half and learned more with this toy in a matter of weeks than he did in a year in preschool! Basically, the screen at the bottom displays letters, shapes, and games for the kids to trace. It's great for visual and auditory learners because the letter is sounded out phonetically, described how to make it auditorially, and then drawn with the blinking lights.

It's really simple for kids to follow and moves at a decent pace. They can do the same letter over and over then "press the paw button" when they want to do a different shape or letter. I highly recommend it!
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Excellent learning tool for preschoolers learning to write their ABC and drawing Shapes.   2010-06-08

My 3 1/2 year old daughter loves this toy. It teaches Uppercase & lowercase letters, drawing various shapes, and some commom pictures. Its a great toy for long car rides, its not annoying like other toys, and the most important part is that my child is actually having fun and learning.
