Description
Witness one of nature's much impressive transformations up shut together with this reusable, collapsible habitat. Fine, transparent mesh lets you see butterfly metamorphosis up shut. Product consists of simple-to-use feeder and complete instructions for habitat. Butterfly larvae together with food shipped directly to your home. The habitat collapses for storage when not in use. You can adopt and raise a handful of caterpillars, watch them convert into painted lady butterflies, then lift the garden cover to open your stunning specimens into the wild. This exciting habitat makes a fabulous introduction to the miracles of nature. The larvae and food available round the year.
Did you recognize this painted ladies (the butterflies, this is) taste together with their feet and have 10,000 eyes? You and your children will be fascinated by all you study concerning these stunning creatures together with the Butterfly Garden from Insect Lore. The kit comes together with a relatively simple-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you offer only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars. The metamorphosis from larva to butterfly takes concerning three weeks from when you get the caterpillar larvae (which arrive in a small container together with all the nutrients they want). Your kids can watch the larvae enhance spectacularly in size, shape chrysalides, and finally emerge into full-fledged painted ladies (it's suggested this they open the butterflies afterwards a few days of observation). This would do a wonderful activity for families together with children of any age, but younger kids will want help assembling the observation chamber and reading the instruction booklet. (Note: The manufacturer recommends this butterflies should not be set free in temperatures lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.) --Rachel Radway

My daughter enjoyed this toy. The net can be used again so you only have to buy the caterpillars.

I think my husband and I were just as excited as my daughter to check on our caterpillars every morning! The chrysallis stage kind of bored my daughter after a week but she is 3 so thast's a given. GREAT product that I would highly recommend.
Customer rating is 3 of 5  3.00 processing fee?!   2010-08-22

I bought for my grandson's birthday and was very disappointed find the certificate required another 15.00 to be sent in! I understood the cost of the larvae would be covered. I have done this project with students and it is a wonderful experience but I think this particular kit is misleading.

We bought this for my 7 year old daughter after seeing a similar product in a major retailer; and I can't recomend it enough for anyone who's kids (or parents, aunts, uncles, etc) are curious about where those colorful butterflies come from every summer.
The kit says that at least 3 of the 5 larvae will survive to become butterflies, we had all 5 survive.
My daughter loved every stage; from watching the larvae grow (very quickly) into caterpillars and become crysalids (not cocoons daddy! Moths come from cocoons!" my daughter corrected me more than once)and then creating her own environment for her butterflies.
When it came time to release them they actually stayed in our yard for a few days (nothing cuter than watching a little girl talk to her butterfly friends about life outside.)
Again; can't recomend this enough.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Additional 3.00 for caterpillars...   2010-08-16
By Olivia Bryant (HUBERT, NC, US)
I like to give this as a gift, but still have not come up with the "ideal" way to address the additional 3.00 to order the caterpillars (hand them 3.00, write a check...either way it is akward). I think the price of the caterpillars should be included, and then you can just enter the code when you want them sent.
